What It's Like To Be An Amazon Flex Delivery Driver

3 min read

Amazon has offered free two-day shipping for Prime members since 2005. As Amazon rolls out a one-day shipping guarantee for its 100 million Prime members, Amazon Flex drivers help solve the company’s last mile problem. CNBC spoke to these on-demand contract workers all over the country to find out what it’s really like to deliver for Amazon. Watch the video to hear about the pay, pace of work, and how Amazon Flex works.

Is Amazon Prime worth it? For many members, free shipping is a key Amazon Prime benefit that factors into their decision to pay $119 per year for the service. As Amazon starts offering Prime members the added benefit of one-day shipping they’re working with on-demand contract drivers to help with this especially labor-intensive and expensive hand-delivery.

We spent a day with Omar Montes, a Flex driver in the San Francisco Bay Area. Omar helped a friend deliver around 46 packages in 3½ hours, for $105. “These are like the good days that make you want to continue doing Amazon. But, you know, there’s obviously bad days too,” Montes said.

I have no problem with capitalism but this ideal that you can call people independent contract , just to get out of your responsibilities as a owner is terrible . Plus the treat them like employee with out the liability

This sounds like fun, but after watching this it seems totally not worth it. I kind of want to try a gig job, but Amazon and some of the others seem so exploitative.

It is NOT worth it. People only see the hourly rate and forget to put it into perspective. This is the perspective: imagine me asking you to drive me 60 miles 1 way and 60 miles back putting 120 miles on your car for 54$ bucks? Would you do it? For most people their car is their most reliable way to get around. Dont lose it chasing 60$ dollar blocks. Once they tried to send me 80miles one way for 54$ I forfeited my block after I seen where I was going on the spot and never came back. I did this as 2ndary to pay off my wife car for 1 months. But I was ruining mine in the interim. NOT WORTH IT!!!!

people in the comments bashing this job. No it doesn't pay much but you never know peoples reason for doing it. i think its good for supplementary income. if i had a better vehicle i would do it. i would rather be out traveling vs being couped up in a building for 8 hours a day honestly lol

Another job not for me; as a retired trucker/delivery driver/limo driver with millions of accident free miles the job of "Driver" has just gotten worse and worse over the course of my life. Use your own vehicle, wear it out and get paid less than minimum wage. "You turned down the opportunity to screw yourself and are refusing work? How dare you! You will be written up for failure to comply and take a hit for the team; We are AMAZON and don't you forget it you lazy contract laborer worker!" (I suppose they are trying to compete with Walmart as the crappiest company to work for in America, while making billions in profits.)

  25. Matthew M

This whole program is horrible. This Amazon deliberately using people to deliver in an attempt to put other shipping companies out of business, then they can purchase planes and trucks at a seriously deep discount. Amazon thinks about nothing but themselves and the dollar. By the time you are done paying yourself, fuel, auto maintenance and repair, there really isn’t a benefit here. Wait… if I start a shipping company to work with Amazon I will make more money ? You mean until they put everyone else out of business and then they come for your shipping business. Middle finger to Amazon.

These people shouldn't work that cheap. After they factor in expenses and depreciation and wear and tear of their vehicles, there is no way they're coming out ahead.

"Contracting Out", the mantra of the early eighties, would "solve all our Logistics problems" pronounced our Scottish sales rep. as he loved "real salesmen in the field". I was at Loomis Canada LONG ENOUGH to make him take his comment back. We had the top drivers in the west bar none, and the best service. We then went to crackheads, driving bad maintenance trucks, and called them "slopperators" for good reason. I left the month the company lost their Number One status in the industry. This isn't new.

Amazon Flex clearly states this is a supplementary income, meaning not suitable as a full-time job. If you sign up on that basis then you shouldn't moan about not making how much you would in a full-time job.

Maybe all of these drivers should stop working for amazon flex, demand better pay and Amazon will have to do something. Because in the mean time, these people are settling for mediocre pay and Amazon is benefiting from them. Maybe it’s time to stop settling?!
