Apple, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are partnering with automotive companies that rely on the tech giants to bring phones and artificial intelligence into vehicles.

At its WWDC this week, Apple rolled out updates to CarPlay, which is now available in 90% of new vehicles in the United States. At Google I/O last month, Google announced an update to Android Auto and said Android Automotive, the first card with the Android operating system natively built in, will be available next year,

Amazon Alexa and Apple’s Siri are also increasingly showing up in automobiles. IHS Markit forecasts that by 2024 almost 700 million of these software platforms will be enabled in vehicles.

State passes law against distracted driving:

Car manufacturers: here's a radio that's the same as the phone you used to text on🤦‍♂️

No thanks, I need to keep my eyes on the road for these distracted drivers. I don't need nor want to be "plugged-in" while I am driving in traffic.

I'd rather have a car with a replaceable DIN standard radio than one of these integrated infotainment systems that will eventually become outdated.
Personally I really would rather not have anything with Amazon or Google linked to key systems in my car.

I have an aftermarket Android unit in my car, and all I use it for (besides music) is to run Torque Pro locally so it can talk to the car and I can see virtual gauges because my dashboard just has idiot lights. Where's that? I don't see car makers offering to display more information about the car you are in.

The reason they are in your car is so they can GPS track you and find out places you like to go, so they can sell your information to advertising companies and insurance companies.

I'll just stick to my cheap radio that only plays music. I don't need all these apps and maps and features distracting me while I drive. And it also brings up a lot of privacy concerns.

the biggest selling/sanity point is that you can buy cars (2+) from any/different manufacturer and have it work/programmed the same .. if it truly becomes tablet-based you can invest in a car control/management system and carry it forward to future/generation car purchases from any/different (car) manufacturer.

In 2009 with the auto bailout, 2 opportunities were missed .. 1) take away the engine/power train from car companies and 2) take away the dash/instrumentation .. during that time (2008/2009) the trucking manufacturers were unfazed as they largely rely on third parties to provide their power trains .. the dash/instrumentation/computer (thru conventional tech companies) could also be independent of car manufacturers. This would allow for engine choice (diesel/gasoline/lng/electric) by consumer need and tech/computing in the car without having to buy a new car or a particular model of car.

So now distracted drivers will have more options & accidents will increase, & automobiles have more electronics so they cost more to repair. Yay insurance rates are going up… Again!

Was there anything wrong with turning a knob to increase temperature? What was wrong with a volume knob?

Seems we have gone past the point where technology made our lives easier and actually offer real benefit.
Now, the world is obsessed with technology for technology sake.

Android Automotive just launched on Polstar 2. Not Android Auto. Android Automotive is a car infotainment OS designed specifically for the car. Polstar realized that if they're a progressive car brand, their technology should embrace what customers need, a Google designed OS meant for the car, because tech companies such as Google do better U.I. design.

In my car, we ride old style. I do not have any of those fancy infotainment systems that modern cars have. For listening to music, I have a double din Pioneer DVD player / radio from 2010.

If you want to listen to music, you gotta grab the AUX cable and plug it into your phone.

Putting android in a car. Imagine needing to click the X on the corner of an add before you put your car in Drive drive. Google business is not making software. It's driving advertising and collecting data.

This is just silly to me about how people want fancy interfaces in new cars. I grew up in a family with a lot of siblings and our cars we're generally second hand. It wasn't until we've became adults that we we're able to buy newer cars. But yet this has humbled me to respect the simplicity of an old car. Both mechanically and physically the car has carried out it's purpose from A to B. If you are looking for the latest bells and whistles lease a BMW. To this day even though I have 2018 Nissan Altima midnight I still have 07 mazda 5 beater as a backup. My humble mazda always puts a smile on my face when I drive it.
